Travelling by car

Speed limitation:

- 130 kmh on the highway

- 100 kmh on the road

- 50 kmh in localities.

Austrian autoclubs are called OAMTC and ARBO. Both organizations and the radio station O3 provide information about current situation on the roads (call 15-90 or 15-27).

The driver must have an International driving licence and technical passport for the car. The car must have international VIN, first aid kit and emergency light.

You will be required to insure the car.

Reminder for austrian wines fans: driving a car blood alcohol level mustn`t exceed 0,8 per mille.

You should also remember that beeping is prohibited in the cities.

Travelling to Vienna in own car, you should bear in mind that pedestrians are more likely in Vienna than drivers. Feel free to leave the car in a guarded paid parking (with the help of a carhop or hotel porter).

In the inner town you will be faster going on foot.

In areas of short parking marked with signboards and blue stripes, and in the 1st district, parking is allowed with parking ticket (Park-schein) only and for not more than 1,5 hours.You can buy parkind tickets in all tobacco shops, petrol stations and banks. To cancel a parking ticket you need to put the right date (yesr, month, day and hour) down in the proper columns of the ticket.

The ticket is usually placed under the wind-screen.

Cars parked in the wrong places are dragged immediately to a special parking, and the car owner will have to pay a round sum for that.
